From a public-policy standpoint, undeniably true. However, Rs have spent the past five years keeping the rubes good and riled up over the claim that the federal government won’t live up to its funding commitments on Medicaid expansion, not to mention the specter of more of those people getting health insurance. They can’t back down now.

What Rs stand to lose are elections, most likely to candidates carrying pitchforks and wearing tricorn hats festooned with teabags.

It would be unworthy of me to suggest they also find the idea of the poor facing “death and crushing medical debt” a hoot.
