Positive News in Libya

The coalition air strikes, along with the rebels preserving the initiative, appear to be on a roll:

Libyan rebels are claiming to have captured the town of Sirte, the home of embattled Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi.

The Reuters news agency on Monday quoted a rebel spokesman as saying that the town has fallen into the hands of anti-government fighters.

The claim, which could not be independently verified, came as the rebels, bolstered by coalition air strikes, pushed westwards and seized control of the key towns of Bin Jawad, Ras Lanuf, Uqayla, Brega and Ajdabiya in a rapid advance along the coastline. [...]

Our correspondent said Gaddafi's forces appeared to be withdrawing eastwards. Those still in Bin Jawad, the latest town to fall to rebels, surrendered without a fight, Bays said.

Again, there are innumerable differences between this military action and Iraq. Chief among them: this one appears to be going quite well. Knock on wood. Should it turn out to be successful, the president will be able to show a distinct contrast between what he called "wars" and "dumb wars." In this case, President Obama-style military action is quick, concise and successful (knock, knock), while Bush Republican wars are deadly, long and ill-conceived.

We'll see how events continue to progress.
