This seems very premature to me, but the Republican National Committee is reportedly discussing the possibility of a contested convention.
The RNC isn't quietly preparing for a brokered convention because they're afraid no clear winner will emerge. They're preparing for it because they're afraid Trump will win.
More than 20 [GOP leaders] convened Monday near the Capitol for a dinner held by Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, and the prospect of Trump nearing next year’s nominating convention in Cleveland with a significant number of delegates dominated the discussion, according to five people familiar with the meeting.
Weighing in on that scenario as Priebus and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) listened, several longtime Republican power brokers argued that if the controversial billionaire storms through the primaries, the party’s establishment must lay the groundwork for a floor fight in which the GOP’s mainstream wing could coalesce around an alternative, the people said.
I find it extremely unlikely that the RNC would actually go through with this even if Trump wins because stripping him of the nomination would obliterate the party.
Because this is America, Trump would almost certainly garner 40 to 45 percent of the popular vote in the general election no matter what he says or does. If they were to strip him of the nomination, however, there's no doubt in my mind that he would launch an independent bid just to punish the Republican party for not bowing to him. That could lead to a far worse outcome for the GOP.
Don't get me wrong. I'd love to see this happen even if it doesn't seem very likely to me.
This is a remarkable turn of events considering that just last week the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) circulated a memo urging candidates to be more like Trump.
The NRSC is also selling Trump merchandise.
