Regime officials have attempted to justify Trump's order to assassinate Iranian General Qassem Soleimani by saying the general was about to order attacks on American targets in the region, but the regime has not presented any evidence of that publicly or even privately to members of Congress.
Now, another part of the Trump regime's story appears to be falling apart.
NBC News reported early this morning that Trump authorized the killing of Soleimani in June of 2019.
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump authorized the killing of Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani seven months ago if Iran's increased aggression resulted in the death of an American, according to five current and former senior administration officials.
The presidential directive in June came with the condition that Trump would have final signoff on any specific operation to kill Soleimani, officials said. [...]
"There have been a number of options presented to the president over the course of time," a senior administration official said, adding that it was "some time ago" that the president's aides put assassinating Soleimani on the list of potential responses to Iranian aggression.
If Soleimani was actually killed for a different reason than what the Trump regime has stated publicly, it suggests to me that they don't believe the public or Congress would accept the real reason.
I don't. The killing of one single contractor by some unnamed and unspecified proxy force in a region where many people are killed every single day is no justification for actions that could have easily led to war and many more deaths on all sides.
And with that said, the Trump regime lies as a matter of course so we also don't know if the reason reported by NBC News is actually the real reason Trump gave the order. Almost nothing can be taken at face value under Trump.
If the White House doesn't want to be called liars, they should come clean.
