Virtually no one considers marijuana to be a genuine threat to the country, but Trump reportedly created a committee whose missions it to portray it as a threat.
Buzzfeed News obtained internal documents that show Trump conscripted over a dozen federal agencies into a committee that is suppose oppose marijuana even if their own data says they shouldn't.
The Marijuana Policy Coordination Committee, as it’s named in White House memos and emails, instructed 14 federal agencies and the Drug Enforcement Administration this month to submit “data demonstrating the most significant negative trends” about marijuana and the “threats” it poses to the country. “The prevailing marijuana narrative in the U.S. is partial, one-sided, and inaccurate,” says a summary of a July 27 meeting among the White House and nine departments. In a follow-up memo, which provided guidance for responses from federal agencies, White House officials told officials, “Departments should provide … the most significant data demonstrating negative trends, with a statement describing the implications of such trends.”
I don't believe Trump himself really gives two shits about marijuana policy, or many other policies for that matter. This sounds like something Attorney General Jeff Sessions talked him into.
In any case, you can probably add this to the GOP's list of things Democrats will investigate if they regain control of Congress.
Republicans would be fools to pick a fight over marijuana policy because it may be one of the only issues where "states' rights" is actually invoked in good faith by both parties. Locking people up for smoking a joint is one of the biggest wastes of money and humanity this country has ever committed itself to. Tens of billions of dollars have been spent policing this non-violent "crime"
