The Trump regime recently certified that the Iran nuclear deal is working, but that doesn't mean Trump has given up his efforts to find an excuse to assert otherwise.
According to the New York Times, Trump has instructed members of his staff to find him a reason to abandon the deal.
American officials have already told allies they should be prepared to join in reopening negotiations with Iran or expect that the United States may abandon the agreement, as it did the Paris climate accord. And according to several foreign officials, the United States has begun raising with international inspectors in Vienna the possibility of demanding access to military sites in Iran where there is reasonable suspicion of nuclear research or development.
If the Iranians balk, as seems likely, their refusal could enable Washington to declare Tehran in violation of the two-year-old deal. [...]
Mr. Trump’s instructions followed a sharp series of exchanges last week with Secretary of State Rex W. Tillerson, after Mr. Trump initially balked at certifying, for a second time since he took office, that Iran is in compliance with the agreement. He later reluctantly approved the certification.
If they go through with this, America will stand alone. Again.
No one is going to come to the table to renegotiate a deal that is working and has been working for two years already. Iran would have no reason to and neither would our allies in Europe. Trump has no credibility and no leverage. He's a global laughing stock.
It's a minor miracle that the Iran nuclear deal was ever agreed to in the first place and the only reason it happened is because President Obama and former Secretary of State John Kerry commanded the respect and credibility necessary to accomplish it.
Can anyone even imagine members of Trump's team sitting down for a thoughtful, coherent and productive negotiation? They can't make it through a single week without stepping on their own dicks.
