Manafort said he “hoped and expected” that Gates “would have had the strength to continue the battle to prove our innocence.” “For reasons yet to surface he chose to do otherwise,” Manafort said. “This does not alter my commitment to defend myself against the untrue piled up charges contained in the indictments against me.”
The smart play would be for Paul Manafort to roll on everyone above him in the Trump campaign, but he continues to whistle past the graveyard. That implies (a) he's as dumb as a box of hair; (b) he's paying his lawyer far too much for bad advice; or (c) he's a hell of a lot less scared of Robert Mueller than he is of someone else. Whether or not that someone else speaks with a Russian accent is, of course, mere speculation. –alopecia

You know, absolutely know that Rump has the dirtiest hands of all. He’s cheated and failed and bribed and bankrupted and yet somehow claims he’s a billionaire? I don’t think so. I keep thinking or rather wishing I would wake up from this nightmare where we have a nefarious imbecile as president, one who tweets the dumbest, vilest garbage imaginable, destroying any semblance of decorum, intelligence, savvy knowledge, or even the image of basic competence that a president should have.

I don’t think those guys ever expected to be called to account over their nefarious doings. They’ve been getting away with it for DECADES, surfing along on their giant piles of money, jet-setting around with all the oligarchs and shady heads of state — livin’ large! Sucks to be them, with Mueller giving them the stone face and two unpalatable options. I think it has finally occurred to them that it’s All Over. For keeps. Let alone the possibility of significant prison time.

Speaking of which, I wonder if Mrs. Gates had a clue? Maybe she was in denial. Like Carmela Soprano.
