Former Republican presidential candidate and second place finisher Rick Santorum tells RealClearPolitics that he’s preparing to run for president again.
“I’m doing everything right now as if I’m running,” he said. “So we’re moving forward and trying to line up supporters — both grassroots and donors. We’re talking to folks who might be interested after the [midterm] election to come and help the team, so we’re starting to put the pieces together, but we’re not going to make the final decision until 2015.”
Santorum says he’s preparing for another run because, historically, candidates who finished in second place in previous elections fared better in the next election.
I’m not so sure that will be the case for Santorum because the social landscape has changed dramatically in just the last two years, with same-sex marriage expanding to more than half the country.
On the other hand, Santorum may view this as his moment and opportunity to run against it, but he’ll have to compete with Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) who has wasted no time in calling for a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage. In either case, it seems inevitable that the Republican candidate in 2016 will be solidly anti-gay.
But what a joy it would be if Santorum, a man who brought us classics like “blah people,” does run again.
