Multiple media outlets are reporting that Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker will drop out of the Republican presidential race during a press conference scheduled for 6 p.m. today.
From the New York Times:
Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin has concluded he no longer has a path to the Republican presidential nomination and plans to drop out of the 2016 campaign, according to three Republicans familiar with his decision, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Mr. Walker called a news conference in Madison at 6 p.m. Eastern time.
“The short answer is money,” said a supporter of Mr. Walker’s who was briefed on the decision. “He’s made a decision not to limp into Iowa.”
The short answer may be money, but the money isn't there because the support isn't there. It's difficult for a candidate polling at 0 percent to raise funds.
There were signs that Walker's campaign was in serious trouble last week when some of his donors began floating the idea of donating to other candidates. Walker's donors also launched a whisper campaign in the press against his campaign manager Rick Wiley.
This comes as a big surprise to me because I believed he would "limp into Iowa" as one of his supporters put it. He's exiting the race far earlier than I expected.
