This seems like a very big deal.
The New York Times first broke the news this morning that Trump's former chief strategist and campaign executive Steve Bannon has been subpoenaed by special prosecutor Robert Mueller.
WASHINGTON — Stephen K. Bannon, President Trump’s former chief strategist, was subpoenaed last week by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, to testify before a grand jury as part of the investigation into possible links between Mr. Trump’s associates and Russia, according to a person with direct knowledge of the matter. [...]
The subpoena could be a negotiating tactic. Mr. Mueller is likely to allow Mr. Bannon to forgo the grand jury appearance if he agrees to instead be questioned by investigators in the less formal setting of the special counsel’s offices about ties between Mr. Trump’s associates and Russia and about the president’s conduct in office, according to the person, who would not be named discussing the case.
The New York Times reports that it's not clear why Bannon has been subpoenaed now rather than at some point last year, but isn't it?
Trump, Bannon, and Breitbart just had a very public break-up because Bannon described Donald Trump Jr's meeting with the Russians at Trump Tower as "treasonous." Bannon tried to walk his comments back by saying it was directed at former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort, not Trump Jr. I don't know if I believe that, but even if that were the case I'm sure Mueller's team would be interested in what Bannon has to say about it.
The fact that Bannon has been called to testify strongly suggests Mueller's grand jury is actively considering more indictments and I have to think Donald Trump Jr. is near the top of the list of potential perps. Bannon has been close to Trump for years and he was part of his administration from the very beginning so he could testify against anyone in Trump's inner circle.
