Texas senator and Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz does not want to be the only one left without a chair when the music stops so, to that end, he is also backing the repeal of birthright citizenship under the Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution.
“Absolutely. We should end granting automatic birthright citizenship to the children of those who are here illegally,” Cruz said in an interview on Michael Medved’s radio show. “That has been my position from the very first day of my running for the Senate.”
To my knowledge, this was not Cruz's position on the first day of his Senate campaign or any day since then, but it's a good line If you're fishing for nativist votes.
As ThinkProgress points out today, Ted Cruz and the other Republican frontunners would not be American citizens if not for birthright citizenship.
It certainly appears that ending birthright citizenship is now Republican party doctrine.
