What does the future of the Republican party after Trump look like?
It may look like Daniel McCarthy, the man challenging Senator Martha McSally in the GOP primary ahead of the 2020 election.
McSally is a typical Republican who's been endorsed by Trump and supports his positions on immigration, but the future of the GOP may be more radical or at least far more stupid than that.
McSally's challenger says we must construct Trump's border wall as soon as possible, but he also says we should annex Mexico.
“There is a process to become states for the United States,” McCarthy said Tuesday morning on an Arizona radio station. “Clearly 30 million Mexican illegal immigrants want to be United States citizens, probably half the country wants to be United States citizens.” [...]
McCarthy has other ideas too. He agreed with the radio host on Tuesday that adding some “beachfront property” to U.S. territory might be nice.
“There’s a reason they’re coming here,” he said of immigrants crossing into this country illegally. “Now listen, we need to have a border wall immediately, and then after that then we can start talking about maybe some solutions.”
I thought about it for a while and I still can't figure out why we need a border wall if we're going to annex Mexico anyway. And if we're willing to make them citizens by annexing Mexico, why wouldn't we open a pathway to citizenship for immigrants right now?
McCarthy probably won't defeat McSally, but the next one like him might. The last remnants of sanity will be wiped away within another cycle or two.
