People who declare themselves to be “real Christians” or constantly point to their faith or devoutness as if it actually means something are trying, every damn time, to cover up the actions they know are un-Christian.

I’ve known religious people who truly do good works. Not a one of them draws attention to it or their faith. They’re matter-of-fact and low key about it.

I’ve known people who can’t go more than a paragraph without making you aware that they consider themselves deeply devout Christians. Without exception they’ve nearly as frequently said or done something decidedly un-Christian.

In my experience, people who describe themselves as “men of God” or “God-fearing Christians” or any of the several other turns of phrase they use, have been without exception utterly un-Christian.

They use it like some sort of protective mantra as if declaring themselves to be “of God” means they can do whatever they want. “Pay no mind to what I’m actually doing. It doesn’t matter how henious and vile it is because I’m a man of God.” as if that somehow trumps everything else.

And you would be correct. If anyone starts talking proudly about being a conservative Christian or conservative Catholic, I suggest picking up your things and moving to a safe location, because the chances are high that you are dealing with a right-wing loon. They truly see anyone outside of their narrow purview (feminists, gays, liberals, minorities, non-Christians, poor, etc.) as being beneath contempt and somehow not human, so the laws of decency get to be mothballed and empathy is a nonexistent luxury that can be denied. This is real convenient, because they still get to tout their bona fides as “great Christians” because it is not like they are harming “real people” – they are just harming “others”. Otherize people to the point of dehumanizing them, destroy them in every way you can think and make their lives a living hell, and then glad-hand around the Church on Sunday to prove what a God-fearing man/woman you are. The whole outlook is disheartening and disgusting, but it is very prominent in this movement.

Yup. None of that touchy-feely, hippie-dippy crap for Scott Lloyd and RealMurcan Jesus!

For people who claim to believe every word of the bible is literally true, Righty Christians sure do spend a lot of time and effort … erm … interpreting inconvenient passages into nonexistence, don’t they?
