While Republicans are running around like elephants with their heads cut off and trying to figure out which fundamentalist to throw the hot potato to, they all seem to have forgotten that they actually HAD a candidate that was doing a lot of the stuff that impressed everyone about Barack Obama. They had someone who was moving beyond the traditional GOP base, raising massive amounts of money and who appealed to tomorrow's voters and not just the old, dying demographic.
Ron Paul, of course. Now, imagine if there was a young Ron Paul who had some personal charisma. That would might produce something new and interesting in the Republican party. But of course, the Republicans shunned Paul like a leper and for the absolute wrong reasons to shun him; his opposition to the Iraq war. Now with the party in disarray, there's an opening for someone who sees the opening to take over the whole crumbling mess.
