Rachel Maddow started last night's show with a long and sorta creepy monologue about how President Obama seemed to have an unrequited crush on the Republicans but he should stop and....well, that part wasn't clear. Start acting like a douchebag, I guess.
But our President's civility - I don't really consider it bipartisanship - is its own reward. It's not trying to get something except to change the tone in Washington. And if the Republicans don't change their tone, well...that's not Obama's problem. Change what you have the power to change and all that. But's it's not about getting votes from the GOP. If that happens, fine, but it seems to be beside the point.
So inviting the Republicans over for drinks and whatnot is manufactured issue. I don't see how the GOP is effecting his agenda in any significant way at all, which is all part and parcel of the same self-confidence.
