The Nuclear Option

Here's a shocker. Wingnuts are misusing the phrase "the nuclear option."

As ThinkProgress describes, contrary to this misguided nonsense from far-right doofs like Hannity, a reconciliation vote isn't the nuclear option. Reconciliation is a legal and well-established Senate procedure. President Bush used it several times during his term, most famously to pass his tax cuts.

The nuclear option, however, is merely a right-wing proposal made popular several years ago. If adopted as a rule, it would reduce cloture to 50 votes rather than 60. In other words, the Republicans had contemplated breaking Democratic filibusters by circumventing the rule calling for 60 votes. That's the nuclear option. It sucked when the Republicans made it up, and no one is proposing it now.
