I was running around doing errands today so I haven't been able to comment much on the Nancy Killefer / Tom Daschle / tax stuff but I'll fill in a little of what I know.
Because I write for HuffPost, I was sent the Nancy Killefer information about three weeks ago. I didn't really know what to do with it. For one, I'm not really a reporter in that sense; I'm a commentator / sorta reporter when circumstances require it but heavy duty forensic numbers research isn't my thing. For another, it seemed minor to me. For a third thing, I've personally had tax liens in the past and so it wasn't a controversy I felt like taking the lead on.
And - lots of people have had tax liens. The site Web Of Deception has a ton of information to sift through. Some are close to Obama; his best friend, his half sister, Reverend Wright. Some are Republicans, like Joe The Plumber or the entire Oregon Republican Party. Some are big companies like NBC-Universal.
The problem right now is that the issue reached a tipping point in the press. And frankly, the tax system DOES need to be simplified and all these problems point to that, I think. I think some of the problems were totally innocent. But the way our press works, expect to see more about this for the next few days.
