In addition to tying contraception and defunding the non-existent ACORN to a continuing resolution that would prevent a government shutdown, Representative Louie Gohmert Pyle (R-TX) has also introduced an amendment aimed at dissuading President Obama from playing golf until sequestration has been averted.
On Tuesday, the Obama administration announced that the across-the-board sequester cuts will result in the cancellation of all White House tours indefinitely. This no doubt upset ticket holders, but it also seems to have struck a nerve with Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX), who introduced an amendment to a continuing resolution on the federal budget that seeks to block President Obama from using federal funds for any future golf outings until the tours are reinstated.
Obviously if we prevent the president from playing golf on a weekend afternoon, House Republicans such as Louie Gohmert will see the error of their ways and commit themselves to replacing sequestration with a more balanced package that includes revenue.
Republican messaging on sequestration continues to be a confusing mess. Because on one hand, they’ve finally received the spending-cut tonic they’ve been clamoring for, but on the other hand we must blame Obama for it. It also appears that the cancelation of White House tours is seen as a greater trespass than, you know, the loss of jobs or the furlough of thousands of federal employees.
