Tour Update

After today, the Mark Cavendish show is over until Paris but Thor Hushovd is ahead by 5 points in the sprinter competition.

On Stage 12, Levi Leipheimer crashed and was subsequently crushed under the massive weight of a tubby Mick Rogers and broke his wrist, so he's out, which means Lance Armstrong has lost his biggest ally.

And the Alps mountain stages begin on Sunday.

Oh, and two riders, Julian Dean and Oscar Freire were shot yesterday.

Huh-what? Riders were shot? Yes.

Police have launched an investigation after two riders suffered light injuries when hit by shots fired from an airgun on the 13th stage of the Tour de France on Friday.

New Zealander Julian Dean of Garmin-Slipstream and Spaniard Oscar Freire of Rabobank were hit with pellets near the 165km mark of the 200km stage in the hilly Vosges region.

Part of the fun of the Tour is watching the insane spectators along the tour route. Cycling is a true "people's sport" in that being a spectator is absolutely free, and you're this close to the athletes. But that freedom often creates too many grabby hands and drunk campers who think it's awesome to get this close to the riders. The legendary Eddy Merckx was punched in the kidney during a climb. Lance Armstrong crashed in 2003 when a kid with a yello feed bag snagged his handlebar. And Giuseppe Guerini collided point blank with a guy with a camera. But I think this is the first time Tour riders have been shot.

Adding... Mick Rogers isn't tubby. That was a joke.
