I suppose it was only a matter of time before Trump broached the subject of our prison at Guantanamo Bay, a facility that should not exist anymore.
Trump watched a Fox & Friends report this morning and then proceeded to tweet the following lie:
122 vicious prisoners, released by the Obama Administration from Gitmo, have returned to the battlefield. Just another terrible decision!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 7, 2017
The truth, according to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, is that the overwhelming majority of detainees who returned to the battlefield were released before President Obama even took office.
According to a September 2016 report from the U.S. Office of the Director of National Intelligence, 113 of those 122 detainees who have been confirmed as “re-engaging” were released from Guantanamo Bay under the Bush administration.
Only nine of them were released during the Obama administration.
President Obama tried to close the prison. He signed an executive order to close the prison on his first day in office, but Congress voted to keep the prison open every single year of his presidency. During the early years of his administration, even Congressional Democrats voted to keep the prison open.
I think it's safe to assume Trump will make no effort to close the prison. He may even try to fill it up again.
