UK Supreme Court Rules Against Boris Johnson

Written by SK Ashby

The British Supreme Court has ruled that Prime Minister Boris Johnson's recent suspension of parliament was unlawful because, according to the court's ruling, it had the effect of "frustrating or preventing the ability of Parliament to carry out its constitutional functions without reasonable justification."

Responding to the news, Boris Johnson spoke out of both sides of his mouth and said parliament's return to London will make it more difficult to reach a deal, as if he were ever close to getting one, but also that he'll work with them to reach a deal.

“As the law currently stands, the UK leaves the EU on October 31st come what may but the exciting thing for us now is to get a good deal,” Johnson told reporters in New York.

“And that is what we are working on. And to be honest it is not made much easier by this kind of stuff in parliament or in the courts,” he said.

“As the law stands, we leave on October 31 and I am very hopeful that we will get a deal and I think what the people of the country want is to see parliamentarians coming together working in the national interest to get this thing done and that is what we are going to do,” he added.

Personally, I don't think this makes much difference at all.

Parliament has already voted to pass a law that requires Johnson to ask the European Union for another delay; a law that Johnson has pledged not to follow. And given that parliament voted against former Prime Minister Theresa May's deal three times, I think we can reasonably infer that parliament would not approve even if Johnson proposed the same or a similar deal.

It's like everyone knows they need to cancel the Brexit but no one wants to stick their neck out and call for it. I can't necessarily disagree with those who say another delay would be pointless because this has happened before and it will all happen again until the Brexit is finally carried out or canceled.

This is all very stupid, but I can't laugh because this is America and we have our own dumpster fire(s) in progress.
