In 1980, there was rampant inflation, unemployment, a gas crisis, a hostage crisis, a Cold War with the Soviets, a boycotted Olympics and what was generally considered to be "malaise." Very, very unpopular president whose approval poll numbers were in the 20s.
And the final Gallup poll prior to the election was: Reagan 47, Carter 44. Three points. Of course Reagan won that election in a landslide.
I wonder if concern trolls on TV complained: Why can't Reagan close the deal?
