Trump and his regime are history now, but the Chinese government evidently hasn't forgiven or forgotten that members of his regime accused China of many things they never substantiated.
China's ruling party apparently believed that imposing sanctions on members of the regime could have had unintended consequences prior to Joe Biden's inauguration, but Biden is in office now and they've imposed sanctions on nearly 30 former officials.
WASHINGTON – The Chinese government on Wednesday slapped sanctions on former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, former national security advisor Robert O'Brien and former trade advisor Peter Navarro, along with other members of the Trump administration. [...]
The Chinese government also named former deputy national security advisor Matthew Pottinger, former Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Kelly Craft, Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs David Stilwell and Undersecretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy and the Environment Keith Krach.
Former national security advisor John Bolton and former Trump advisor Steve Bannon were also sanctioned Wednesday.
In a statement, China's foreign ministry said these individuals "promoted and executed a series of crazy moves" which is true enough. I can't dispute that.
Under these sanctions, everyone mentioned above is prohibited from entering China or their territories and companies associated with them cannot do business in China.
It's curious that they did not sanction Trump himself, but I think we can reasonably infer that Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping actually had a beneficial relationship at least as far as Xi is concerned. It was Trump who privately blessed China's concentration camps for Muslims during a meeting with Jinping and the most unhinged rhetoric aimed at China was certainly driven by Navarro and Pompeo. China did not forget that "Ron Vara" says you shouldn't eat Chinese food and Trump is still a useful idiot even when he's out of office.
There are plenty of things you can legitimately criticize China for including the Muslim camps mentioned above, but members of the Trump regime did not go that route. They routinely made shit up and invented new conspiracy theories to attack China rather than point a finger at empirical reality.
The Biden administration will be critical of China for real reasons and real things, not whatever shit they just read on Facebook.
